Sugar Republic is a pop up sweets museum and house of fun, which launched earlier this month in Melbourne. Portia Sarris of Orenda Magazine sweet talked with Allison Jones, the artist and creator behind the delicious experience.
Describe yourself/your work in three words.
Brave, Fun and Colourful.
How did you come up with the idea for Sugar Republic? What was it that inspired such a sweet exhibition?
I came up with the idea after travelling to lots of quirky museums around Europe and Asia and noting a trend for immersive and interactive art events. I thought it would be fun to create an adult experience that was about re-living your childhood, and what better theme than sweets!
Do you wish for this exhibition to travel to other cities?
Yes, I would love to take it around Australia.
What do you hope people take away from this exhibition?
That it’s ok to still have fun as an adult. That sugar is a treat to be celebrated. That sometimes it’s good to have no limits on fun and sweetness just for a little while!
What are you obsessed with at the moment?
Making food into art — our florist Vasette has made incredible displays for us with sprinkle-dipped gum leaves. We’ve also created a padded room with fairy floss and a rainbow bridge from sherbet.
I have been lucky in already picking my dream team of collaborators for this event
What’s the best part of your job?
Collaborating with creative friends to come up with crazy, dreamy ideas and actually making them come to life!
Who is your dream collaborator?
I have been lucky in already picking my dream team of collaborators for this event, including super-inspiring women like Natalie Jarvis @electric_confetti, Caroline Khoo @necaterandstore and Tash Skunka @makemeiconic
What’s on the cards for this year? And what can we expect to see next from you?
After so many months working on this event I hope to hit the road and visit my favourite places around Australia and overseas to get some fresh inspiration for my next project.
Sometimes it’s good to have no limits on fun and sweetness just for a little while!
What is your favourite sugar-filled food?
Cinnamon donuts, hot from a market stall! Simple but always a winner.
Where's the best place to satisfy your sweet tooth in Melbourne?
Really loving Easey’s at the moment, just up the road from Sugar Republic. It’s set in a converted train carriage and serves great donuts and other diner food.
